5 Great Ways to Ring in 2016

New Years Eve

It’s almost the new year! There’s an old saying that goes, what you do on New Years, you’ll be doing all year.  I don’t know if it’s entirely accurate, but I’m sure it doesn’t help when it comes to making New Years eve really high pressure.  Here are some semi-low key ways to keep that pressure off this new years eve:

1. Pajama Party
Hanging out in your pjs is always great.  It’s comfortable, it doesn’t matter what your hair looks like, or how tight your clothes are or anything.  Hanging out in your PJs with your friends? even better!  This definitely takes the pressure off the night as being overly glitzy and glam and lets you kick back and hang.  It could even turn into a sleepover, if you wanted it to.

2. Cabin Party
Do you have access to a cabin or know someone who does?  It’s lots of fun to go out into the woods and spend the night there.  The only catch would be if your cabin isn’t good for all seasons, otherwise it’ll be really cold!

3. Heatwave Party
We did this a few times at the apartment and it was really fun, just not at New Years.  Generally it’s pretty frigid at New Years in Winnipeg, so a heatwave party would be perfect.  Basically, you tell everyone to wear shorts and hot weather clothes and then you turn the heat way the heck up.  It’s super hot, and you can go more specific with themes.  We did a “Summer in February” party, with summer themes, and a “Red Hot” party, where we encouraged people to wear red.  It’s the perfect party to throw in an apartment… especially in an apartment where you don’t pay for heat.

4. Dinner Party
Maybe a fancy grown-up party is what you’re after.  A full sit-down dinner party is where it’s at!  You can do pot luck style, or you can provide all the food yourself.  Either way, it’s sure it be a lot of fun.  Just don’t forget the champagne at midnight!

5. Hermit Party
None of the above appeal to you? The only thing you like on this list is the part about pjs?  There is absolutely nothing wrong with not going out on New Years.  Whether it’s you and your significant other, you and your kids, or you and your pets, get cozy and watch a movie or something.  It’s YOUR New Years eve.  Who said you had to go anywhere and see anyone anyway?  😉

What are you doing tomorrow night for New Years Eve?

My Clueless/90’s Birthday Party

Clueless was definitely one of those movies that defined the era.  When I think of the 1990’s, the movie Clueless is one of the things that comes to mind.  It definitely had a huge impact on my 90’s!  From the incredible quotes to the clothes, this movie is everything.  If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for?? (But seriously, it’s on Netflix right now. Canadian AND American, so go watch it now!!)  It was pretty obvious that this would be the best co-theme for my 90’s party.  Plus, do we really need an excuse to dress a little like Cher Horowitz? I don’t think so!

Here are some of the ways I made my party like totally Clueless/90’s:

90's Clueless Party

First of all, there are no fancy-schmancy smart phones in the 1990’s.  So everyone had to leave their fancy non-flip phones in the basket and experience the 90’s as they really were.  Beepers were totally allowed though.

Clueless party

For the food, I had to have food from the movie!  There is a line (pictured above) that basically described the way I ate when I was in high school, so I got some of the best foods from the list.  Cher is so funny, she eats like a chipmunk but thinks she’s a heifer.  So silly!

90's Clueless Party

These were my two themed drinks.  I had to use the ultra mean quote “You’re a virgin who can’t drive” to describe my non-alcoholic beverage.  And when Cher describes Amber as being a “full-on Monet”, that was just too memorable a line to ignore.  And mojitos are amazing 😉

90's Party

I recently had my thrift store dreams come true when I found a copy of Dream Phone in Burlington, Ontario at Value Village.  It was one of the top moments of my entire life.  So of course we had to play the best 90’s teen girl game at the 90’s party!  I think people had fun playing this blast from the past game.

Clueless Party!

I really like giving out little goodie bags or a little something to my guests when they’re leaving (if I can remember to actually do it).  This year it was the little feathery pens, similar to the one that Cher has in the movie.  If any of my friends missed snagging one and still wants it, just let me know! I still have them.

90's Party

For total authenticity, the only music we could listen to had to be from the 90’s, and it had to be on CD.  I had a number of CD’s of bands who started in the 90’s, but the CD was from the 2000’s, and those were NOT played.  I was trying to keep it real. 😉

90's Party

And I definitely had to play the Clueless soundtrack, duh!

The “dress code” of the party was 90’s attire, and it ended up being pretty plaid.  But here’s me and my best girlfriend, Melanie and I showing off our best 90’s inspired outfits.

Hope you enjoyed my little trip back to the 1990’s.  It was also really fun to come back to 2015 and be able to use Instagram though 😉

How to plan an amazing bachelorette party

how to plan an amazing bachelorette party

Ah, the bachelorette party. Arguably one of the most fun parts of being in a wedding party.  You know, aside from being in a wedding 😉 But planning these parties is not always easy.  So far, I’ve been able to help 3 separate maid-of-honours plan a bachelorette for their brides.  2 out of 3 were huge successes, one was a complete fail.

Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your friend’s bachelorette party:

1. Do things the bride wants to do
It should be a no-brainer that the bachelorette party should be geared toward the bride, but that isn’t always the case.  It’s important to pick something that the bride would like doing, or a theme that the bride is actually interested in.  An example of when this didn’t work: I helped my friends sister plan her bachelorette party and we did the whole penis decor/bar party.  The catch, though, was that the bride doesn’t like drinking, and doesn’t like dancing, and was totally unimpressed with the penises we decorated her sisters house with.  We put a lot of time and effort into a party that was not at all what the bride would have wanted to do.  If I could do it again, I would plan a sleepover style party with pjs, popcorn and corny movies.. and the bride would have loved it.
Think about things that the bride would want to do, and plan to do those things!  It doesn’t have to be all about penises and bar hopping to be a bachelorette party, either.

2. Give the guests the heads up about what to expect
I’m a planner and I like to give people lots and lots of notice when I’m planning a party.  I think that when it’s something like a bachelorette party, it’s important to let guests know far in advance what they should expect.  Are you planning a lingerie shower?  Are you planning on going out of town?  People might need to book off work in order to attend, they might need to buy something specific that goes with the theme!  Letting everyone know what to expect is a great way to get all the guests in on the theme while

3. Plan some one-on-one time with the bride.
Before my bachelorette party really started, my maid-of-honour took me to get my nails done, and that was one of the most fun parts about the whole thing, really.  It was great to be able to spend some time with just my maid-of-honour before the festivities started, and it gave the party a great starting off point.  Planning something one-on-one with just the bride before the party starts was so much fun, and after all.. she picked you as her best bridesmaid for a reason! She would probably love that extra time together.

4. Don’t let the bride pay for ANYTHING
Again, this should go without saying… but there are some brides who will insist on helping out, or who will feel weird about having everything paid for her the whole night.  But the thing is that it is her night, and so she shouldn’t have to worry about bringing money.  One way to make it better financially on everyone is to get everyone to help out!  Most guests at a bachelorette party expect to be paying for the bride anyway, so splitting up her costs among the guests is a great way to ease the hit on the maid-of-honour’s wallet.

5. Keep a firm budget in mind
This goes with the last one. Start planning with an idea of how much you’d like to spend.  Can you afford a weekend, or a night? Can you stay in a hotel or take a trip?  Keep that budget in mind as you plan so you don’t go overboard.  It also helps if everyone knows that budget in advance so they can save for it if they would like to participate!  If you’re planning on taking your girl to Vegas, for example, not everyone can afford to do that on the drop of a hat.  Giving people advance warning about how much money they need for something will ensure that everyone can go.

What else do you do to plan an amazing bachelorette party?

Alysa

Happy Halloween ft. Daenarys Targaryen and Khal Drogo

Game of Thrones Couples Costume Game of Thrones couples costume

As soon as we found out we were pregnant, and that we were due at the beginning of November, we’ve been trying to think of a really good Halloween costume to wear to our friends Halloween themed wedding social.  We went through and vetoed ideas like cheerleader/coach, Juno/Paulie, nun/priest(??), or even housewife/milk man.  We thought that if we could find a lot of examples of these on Pinterest, that means they are probably overdone.  We wanted something more original than that!!

So when I was reading Game of Thrones and got to the part where Daenarys was eating the stallion heart to ensure the birth of a boy, I suggested the idea to my husband and he was all over it!  On the show, she was a lot less pregnant than I am now, but I figured that the idea would still come across.

I already had this dress, and since it was so short due to my belly, I wore a pair of brown leggings underneath.  I found the metal necklace at H&M, and I bought the fake blood at the dollar store.  I was lucky in that I already had a little heart shaped purse that I could use as my stallion heart prop.  It was fun to be able to carry it around 🙂

For Khal Drogo, I bought a pair of brown pants from the thrift store, and Andrew cut them up.  He already had the belts, and we used the blue paint from his Tobias costume to make the markings on his chest.  We seem to pick costumes that don’t require him to have a shirt pretty often, so he was totally ok with that.  He put some shoe polish in his beard to make it darker, and (later) put some eyeliner on.  I took some bells and braided them into a wig that I found at Wal-Mart and then braided the whole thing together (many bells = many victories).

The social was really fun, and I’m glad we were able to dress up like characters from my husband’s favourite book series this year.  I’m really excited to see what kind of costumes we can come up with next year, when we have a one year old!!

What are you dressing up as for Halloween?

Happy Halloween!!

Alysa

Breakfast At Tiffany’s Themed Bachelorette Party

Two of my best friends got married at the end of August, and it was my absolute pleasure to be able to play host for at least part of the bachelorette party.  One of the things I will always remember about throwing this type of party is to always gear it towards the bride.  Not everyone is interested in going to a place covered in male genitalia, and it’s always nice to have the option to keep the bachelorette as classy as the bride wants it to be.  That being said, Breakfast At Tiffany’s is one of this brides ultimate favourite movies, so we (the maid of honour and I) thought it might be a really fun theme for the party!

We started the night out at one of the bride’s favourite restaurants for dinner and drinks.  Upon arrival, everyone was given a string of (fake) pearls to go with our theme.

After dinner, we came back to my place for the lingerie shower.  Here is how I decorated:

I love the look of these types of tassel garland, so I made up a few of them in the colours from the movie.

Drink table! I created names for all the drinks and the food that were lines from the movie.

Between the two of us, the maid of honour and I had both seen recipes for alcoholic gummy bears on pinterest.  I just wish I had been able to sample them.  I’m told they were really good though! I also had regular gummy bears for those of us who couldn’t drink.  There were a variety of recipes online.  The general idea is that you put the bears in a container and cover them with vodka (or whatever alcohol you like), then cover them and put them in the fridge.  The recipes were all different when it came to time, but anywhere from 2 hours to a week.  The longer you have the gummy bears in the container, the more alcohol is able to be absorbed.  We gave ours two days, and (I’m told) they were great!

The bride specifically asked for jello shots, so these were made as well! Plus, non-alcoholic ones for poor slobs like me who couldn’t drink during the party.

I also had a photo booth that featured the poster from the movie as inspiration to pose with!

All in all, I think it was a great night! Everyone looked lovely in their little black dresses and pearls, and I hope that the bride felt like a princess <3

Heatwave!

So last night, my husband and I had what was probably our best party yet.  Originally, we were going to have the party in the middle of January, but I was sick the week it was going to happen, so we post-phoned it to last night!

Summer in January  February!/Heatwave

The first thing you should know about having a summer party in the middle of winter is that we CRANKED the heat! We literally put the heat all the way up, it was nice and toasty in there 🙂

IMG_0347

To set the mood, I bought a couple of lei’s from the dollar store, and cut them up to make:

IMG_0349 IMG_0350

A Floral Garland!
I’ll probably leave it up for a while, too! I really love it.

IMG_0353 IMG_0356

We also had a photo booth, with props! We got the “sand” background from Party Stuff here in Winnipeg, as well as the grass skirt! We already had a pineapple because those are delicious.. then add the uke and some fun hats and you’ve got a summer photo booth!

IMG_0357

I put some fun beach towels around the living room! One of the towels is from Old Navy, but it says Bahamas on it.. the other is from Cuba, and says Cuba on it!

IMG_0359

We got a bunch of lei’s from the dollar store so that everyone at the party would “get lei’d” 😉

IMG_0360

One of my favourite things:
We filled the bathtub with snow from outside for the drinks!

IMG_0361

Since it was so hot in the apartment, we turned our bedroom into the cooling off room! We opened the window and put some pillows and extra blankets around.  When people got too hot in the main room, they could come chill out in our bedroom:

IMG_0365

What’s a summer party without summer food?
We got some fresh fruits and veggies!

IMG_0366

For the veggies, we purchased an Avocado veggie dip, it was AMAZING!

IMG_0367

We had two dips for the fruit.. the first one was a home made cream cheese icing! It tasted amazing with the strawberries

IMG_0369

The second one was cool whip! Tastes great with every fruit 🙂

Our food table!

We got some Serpentine’s from the party store as well.. I thought they would be fun, but I didn’t really know how to decorate with them.. so, I wrapped them around our chairs for a pop of colour 🙂

And to be at a summer party, you have to dress the part:
