First Birthday

I know that it’s been 3 months (yikes) since Autumn turned one, but I figured that late was better than never! ūüėČ

The theme we chose for Autumn’s first birthday party was Super Mario Bros, or “1-Up!” ¬†It was a really fun theme, and we could really stick with it with decor and food. ¬†Plus, I really loved Super Mario Brothers growing up, and it was a great excuse to get out the old Nintendo and play some, too!

Here are some of the pictures from Autumn’s first birthday:

First Birthday - Memory Wall

Since I had been taking monthly pictures of Autumn, I decided to put them all up side by side in a memory wall of her first year!  I really liked the way it turned out, and I love that everyone was able to see how much she grew over her first year.
Then, I made a blackboard inspired infographic on black poster board, which showed a lot of Autumn’s favourite things at one. ¬†Her favourite foods, favourite song, and the words she had said at the time, as well as the skills she had already learned. ¬†It was a nice way of showing people the kinds of things Autumn had been up to lately (at that time). ¬†It was fun to make as well!

1 Up

Here’s Autumn with her 1-up banner! ¬†The two mushrooms were also her invitations. ¬†So everyone who came had received one of those as well.

Green and pink cupcakes (for Luigi and Princess Peach), with the pink one being the very first cupcake that Autumn ever got to eat.

First Birthday

And she loved it! I don’t think there were any crumbs at all. ¬†She ate the entire thing.

For food, we had a veggie and fruit platter, red and green M&M’s (for turtle shells), chips and dip, and other various candies (which I am having a hard time remembering because I never actually ate any of it haha). ¬†We also had Pink Princess Peach Lemonade, and regular lemonade, and the lovely pink and green cupcakes.

It was such a great day, and we felt super blessed by those who were able to be there with us to celebrate our little girl <3

11 Months!

11 Months!

This is about a week or so late, but better late than never, right? ūüôā

Autumn is 11 months old and I’m in the midst of planning her first birthday, and I love it! ¬†I’m so excited to be able to celebrate with her for such a great milestone. ¬†Since she was born after 9pm, this will actually be her first birth DAY too! ¬†I also firmly believe in celebrating a mama’s first anniversary of the day they gave birth, because lets be real: the mom did all the work ūüėČ

But I’m getting ahead of myself. ¬†Autumn is 11 months old, and she’s learned so much in the last month! ¬†She started turning pages of board books. ¬†Sometimes, when I sing “If you’re happy and you know it” she’ll clap her hands. ¬†She basically did it all day for one day and then one other time after that, but still!! She knew what I was talking about. ¬†She can roll a ball back and forth with someone else. ¬†She’s getting much much faster at crawling and she’s finding all of the little pieces of dust and other gross things on the floor that I always seem to miss when I sweep. ¬†She also has been practicing her step taking, with our help.

Autumn still loves the mini-muffins I make for her. ¬†Her favourite food at the moment is goldfish crackers. ¬†I try not to give them to her too often, but when she sees me go toward the cupboard they’re in, she gets really really excited about it. ¬†She knows they’re in there! ¬†She also really likes carrots, apples, and cheese.

Autumn is still having two naps a day, and she still has them in her crib (woo hoo!). ¬†She has been waking once in the night recently, but otherwise sleeps from 8pm to 8am. ¬†Her current favourite toy is her Winnie the Pooh bear. ¬†He sleeps in her crib with her, and when we go get her after a nap or in the morning, she insists on bringing him with her to play. ¬†It’s the cutest thing!

Super excited to see what the next month will bring for us ūüôā

10 Months!

Little Miss is 10 months old now! 10! It’s crazy to me to think that in 2 months, she’ll be one.. and basically she won’t be a baby anymore ūüôĀ

This past month, she’s done a lot of growing and learning! She is now sleeping in her crib during her naps, as opposed to in my arms like she had been doing. ¬†She naps twice a day (most of the time), for between 45 minutes to 2 and a half hours, that was the longest she’s slept during the day. ¬†She crawls around, she likes pulling herself up to standing, and she’s gotten really good at eating food.

She still only has two teeth, but I am pretty sure that the next two are going to be arriving shortly.  Her favourite foods right now are pizza, carrots, & mini-muffins that I make for her!  She also really enjoys goldfish crackers, and any other kind of crackers.  She no longer cares very much for spaghetti, at least with spaghetti noodles.

Her favourite book seems to be Hug Time. ¬†Her favourite toy is a set of keys we received from a wedding we went to in July. ¬†We let her sleep with a blanket and a stuffed animal in her bed, her Winnie the Pooh bear that she got from her Uncle and Auntie. ¬†In the mornings, before she calls to us to come get her, we’ve found her playing with him.

She has said her first word, it was “yeah!” ¬†She loves clapping her hands, and she loves dancing. ¬†She’s slowly figuring out more things to do at her activity centre, and she loves listening to music and reading books.

It’s been a really great month <3

9 Months!

9 months

Autumn is now 9 months old, aka 3/4 of a year.  Woah!

This month there were many more firsts. ¬†It was the first time we went to my husband’s family’s cabin, the first time we went on a road trip as a family, and then the first time in Ontario for her, the first time in Quebec, and the first time leaving the country (only to the US, but it still counts!!). ¬† It was also her first time at Niagara Falls, first time in Ottawa, and our first time visiting my sister and my uncle and aunt! ¬†It was a pretty busy month for these kinds of firsts.

Autumn also got her second tooth. ¬†She drank from a straw for the first time, and figured out how to drink from a regular cup (though in her case, it was a shot glass because it was the right size ūüėČ ). ¬†Autumn has also started crawling now, and she pulled herself to standing for the first time. ¬†Great month for firsts ūüôā

Autumn is continuing to grow lots. ¬†She’s in a lit of 9 months clothes, as well as 6-12 months sized clothes. ¬†She’s growing approximately a half inch every month, and is now 27″ tall!

Her favourite game is when one of us carries her up the stairs, and the other one follows behind her. ¬†We don’t even have to be doing anything funny or silly, but she still thinks that it’s pretty hilarious. ¬†Her favourite toy this month was her car keys that she got as part of a goodie bag at our friend’s wedding. ¬†She sleeps best in her own bed, but still had some great sleeps while we were travelling (aside from when we were at the cabin, she did not like sleeping there for some reason).

Autumn’s favourite food this month was the mini-muffins that I make for her, and she loved the pumpkin loaf that my Aunt made for us when we were visiting them.

This next month is going to be pretty busy as well, so it’ll be great to see how Autumn changes this month, too ūüôā

7 Months!

7 months!

Zip! Another month went by! ¬†This year is going by way too fast. ¬†On Sunday, it was a very busy day! ¬†It was my husband’s birthday, and Autumn was 7 months old. ¬†The rest of the week has been pretty busy like that, too.. so I haven’t really gotten a chance to sit down to write this.

At 7 months old, Autumn loves the rattle that I used when I was a baby.  She loves any and all stuffed animals (or buddies), and she still loves pulling off my glasses and playing with them.

Autumn’s favourite foods are muffins and pizza (mostly homemade), she also really enjoys cheese. ¬†So far, there hasn’t really been anything she doesn’t like to eat. ¬†Probably because it’s all so new. ¬†She loves peaches, and bananas. ¬†It’s so much fun to be able to watch her feed herself, too! ¬†She is very good at feeding herself!

Autumn likes seeing either of us walk into a room, but doesn’t like when I walk away from her. ¬†She loves cuddling, tickling, “flying”, and getting high fives. ¬†Autumn sleeps most nights from 8pm until 8am. ¬†She has a few naps during the day.

Autumn can roll both ways, though she often chooses one direction to go and keeps rolling that way until she gets stuck.  She can sit up on her own and she can remove blankets from over her face.  She loves playing peek-a-boo with blankets.

I’m so looking forward to seeing what this month brings <3

one half

1/2 1/2

I can’t believe that as of one week ago, Autumn is 6 months old (or 1/2 of a year). ¬†These last few months have gone by SO fast, it’s unbelievable!

Right now, her favourite things are rolling from back to front and from front to back. ¬†She likes taking off my glasses and playing with them. ¬†She likes her play cube that we’re borrowing from some friends of ours, and she loves all of her little stuffed animals.

We’ve been doing baby-led weaning, and so far her favourites are sweet potatoes, homemade pizza and yogurt.

Autumn is currently wearing lots of size 6 months, as well as 6-9 month clothes and 9 month clothes (with the occasional 3 month size thrown in there, too).

I can’t wait to see what the next 6 months will bring <3

Baby wearing is one of the best things that I’ve done as a new mom. ¬†It’s so great to be able to walk around and still be hands-free! ¬†Plus, my daughter is still comfortable and cozy. ¬†She’s able to sleep in the carrier, she’s able to still eat in the carrier, which is probably the best part about it. ¬†At first, I didn’t know that you could still breastfeed in a wrap style carrier, but you totally can! ¬†I love it so much!

Especially now that it’s getting nicer out, I’m really looking forward to going on so many walks with it this summer. ¬†And I’ll take it with me when we go to the lake, and when we go on our road trip. ¬†and and and!!

This wrap is the Boba wrap! ¬†I love it because it’s totally adjustable, so I can wear it and my husband can wear it very easily. ¬†It’s so wonderful!

Happy 4 Months!

a lovely baby at 4 months

Life with a four month old is pretty great! ¬†We get lots of smiles and stuff all the time, we’ve got Autumn going to bed at a specific time (which is going quite well), and we’re having more fun with her every day. ¬†She’s got a sweet little personality starting to shine through and we love getting to know her.

As of yesterday, we noticed that she started to have her first little buds of teeth, so it’ll be no time before she has her first tooth. ¬†I’m excited/scared about that. ¬†Autumn is still a little cuddler, and she loves being held, especially by her mama or daddy. ¬†She likes the song “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars, she likes her Captain Calamari toy, and her Sophie. ¬†She does NOT like going to bed (but we’re getting there). ¬†She especially doesn’t like napping, unless it’s for 20 minutes while being held. ¬†She doesn’t mind her carseat … sometimes … when she’s not too tired haha.

Autumn can roll from her stomach to her back, she has very good neck control, and she’s starting to want to sit up on her own. She’s a sweetheart, and can’t wait to see what the next month will bring <3

late night feeds

dress: eShakti.com // socks: Amerocan Apparel // necklace: thrifted

I was an idiot when I was younger. I can remember times in my early to mid-twenties where I would stay up really late, probably chatting on msn or watching all the episodes of a tv show or something. Sometimes it would be after I had been out, sometimes not, but I would get to about 4am or so and think “well, it’s already 4am… might as well stay up all night!” And then I would stay up all day, go to school or work and function like a normal human.

I look back on that girl now and it makes me very upset because sleep is SO precious!! I want to go back to that girl and get her to go to sleep.

Now, staying up late looks a little different. ¬†I’m constantly on facebook instead of msn, and I’ve watched a lott of tv and movies in the lasr two months. ¬†My staying up late isn’t after a night out, and I’m glad for that. ¬†Plus, I get to watch a beautiful little girl grow. ¬†It’s different but cuddling a baby is exactly what I want to do right now <3

My Birth Story – Part Two

I just blinked and another month has gone by. ¬†A month ago, I shared the first half of my birth story. ¬†It’s been another month since Autumn was born, so here is the second half of that story.. including the actual birth!

When I left off, I was heading back to the hospital. ¬†I had laboured at home from about 9am until about 5pm. ¬†In the morning, I had been labouring in bed at home, as well as in the tub (which was super helpful). ¬†After a while, my husband suggested that I get out of the bed, and I think that started to speed things up again. ¬†Something that the nurse who did our prenatal said was getting into the bed was bad, and I didn’t think that applied to my bed at home. ¬†It did though! ¬†Being in the bed really slowed everything down, so once I got back up and started walking around, it started up again.

When we got back to the hospital, it seemed a lot busier than it had been when we had been there first thing in the morning. ¬†I had to wait a minute before getting checked, and when they checked me… I was dilated 9cm. ¬†Which was a huge difference from when I was 4cm that morning. ¬†So, I was able to go into a room at last!!

I had to wait a little bit before we went to the room, but I did not lie down in the bed again.

We were led through some doors and down a hallway.  I vaguely remember the doors (people had to be buzzed in to keep everyone safe, which I really appreciated), but I do not remember the hallway.  When I left the hospital later, I marveled at how nice the hallway was.  I had no memory of it, even right away.

When we got into the room, my doula mentioned that I had said I wanted to try labouring in the tub, so they asked me if I still wanted it. ¬†I said I did, so they filled it for me, but I didn’t end up using it. ¬†I was too far along to have to leave the room again to get to the tub, and the hospital didn’t let you give birth in the tub. ¬†Instead, I got on an exercise ball and bounced through the rest of my contractions until I started feeling like I needed to push.

It was on the exercise ball that I asked for the nitrous oxide (aka, the laughing gas). ¬†I went into it kind of thinking that would be the only thing I would use, and I was glad that I was only able to use it. ¬†I didn’t have it for very long, maybe 15 minutes or so, before I decided that I needed to start pushing.

I started pushing at about 7:30pm.  I remember asking how long people usually push for, because I had read stories about people pushing for like 3 minutes.  They said the average time was between an hour and a half and two hours.

There was a huge wall clock right in front of me as I pushed, and all I could do was stare at it the entire time. ¬†Pushing hurt, which I was expecting, but I also felt like it was going on FOREVER. ¬†I remember clearly that at 8:45, I stared at that clock and I thought to myself “I am having this baby by 9:00”

Autumn was born at 9:07pm!  And she was perfect <3

Alysa
