April Declutter Challenge Wrap-up!

April Declutter Challenge

Though technically tomorrow is the last day of the challenge, I finished it a little bit early.  It’s so much easier to find 5 things at a time and just get rid of more than it is to try to look around for one or two things.

This year, doing the challenge was a little more tricky than it was last year.  Not because I ran out of things to get rid of, or spaces to clean out, but because of how quickly I got tired of doing the work!  Being 8/9 months pregnant while doing deep cleans in areas of my house wasn’t easy.  I got it done though.

At the end of the final post about this last year, I said the real challenge would be trying to do it again this year, and I have to say, it was still pretty easy.  Even though I don’t really buy things new, and even though I don’t really buy much at all, I still had a lot of stuff to give away.  I was going to do a big rummage giveaway and have people come look at/take the stuff… but getting it all out as though it was a rummage sale seemed like a LOT of work.  If I had been smart, I should have been organizing it as I went so that I could easily put it all out for people to look at… but I didn’t.  So everything was just in bags all together in a heap, which meant I would have had to put in a lot of work to get it out.  Oh well!  I’m donating it to a really great cause.

April Declutter Challenge – Week 1

April Declutter Challenge

Here we are one week into April, and 7 days worth of decluttering!  At this point, if I were only getting rid of the specified amount per day, I would have given away/thrown out/donated 189 things.  I know that I have decluttered more than that though, because most days I find more than the required amount that I no longer want or need.  I just have too much stuff, so this challenge has already been so refreshing.

In the last week, the focus has been on my bedroom.  So I’ve decluttered my closet, (of clothes, shoes, purses, hats and belts), my dresser, my hairbands and nail polishes, and my bedside table.  Some places had more to get rid of than others, that’s for sure.. but there was also a lot that I felt I needed to keep, for sentimental reasons or others.  For example, the dress that I was wearing when Andrew proposed.  I can’t give that away!  A few things got demoted and are now in the costume bag in our basement, other things I’m giving to my daughter, such as a Cinderella purse and a Tinkerbell purse.  She seems to like them already, too.

Here are some of the pictures I’ve shared on Instagram of the things I’ve decluttered:

Almost half of my hairbands.  Mostly ones that I don’t ever wear because they are too small for my head and so they pinch me and give me a headache.  And some of my nail colours!

SO MANY HANGERS!! I was living with the impression that we didn’t have enough hangers, so I had been doubling and tripling up on some of the hangers I had in my closet.  Well, it turned out, there was no need for that.  I’ve done my closet with the colour scheme of black/pink, and Andrew’s with the colour scheme of green/white, and now all the hangers match and it makes me so happy!  The little baby hangers already left the house, they went to someone who is selling old baby clothes at one of the huge used baby stuff sales in the city this month.  The hangers here are already spoken for as well!

Five on Friday

It has been quite the week this week, so I thought I’d share a few things that have been exciting or brought us some happiness!  It’s been super busy, but all in a good way, and I’m excited to see what April will bring!  There’s still lots to do before the baby comes in May, but the fact that it’s now April really lights a fire under my butt to get some of these things done.  Here are 5 exciting things about this week:

ONE: HARRY POTTER MIDNIGHT RELEASE PARTY!
If you know me, you know that I love Harry Potter.  And you probably also partied with me at a midnight release party before, but if you haven’t, now is your chance!  McNally Robinson is having a midnight party for the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and I NEED to go!  You can find more information here, but it’s going to be a blast and I can’t wait!  I will bring a 2 month old baby with me, don’t think I won’t!!

TWO: CELEBRATE BY LAUREN CONRAD
I’ve been waiting for this book for a couple of months now, and I’m so excited that it’s finally here and that I have it!  It came out Tuesday, but McNally didn’t have it in stock until Thursday, but it doesn’t matter because it’s in my hot little hands now and I am really enjoying reading through it!

THREE: GETTING THE BABY’S ROOM READY
This week has been filled with getting the decor and stuff ready for the new baby’s room, and I’m so happy with the way it’s been going.  We’re not going to have a crib in there for a while, but we’ve got the bassinet in there for now, as well as the dresser/changing table.  I just need to do a few canvas pieces and then hang everything and it’ll be done! This is so nice because we didn’t really have a “theme” for Autumn’s room beforehand, just a colour.  It’s nice that this is coming along and it’ll be a real room even before this little one gets to sleep in there

April Declutter Challenge
FOUR: APRIL DECLUTTER CHALLENGE
My declutter challenge starts today! If you’re wanting to join, make sure you share the things you’re getting rid of on instagram and use #aprildeclutterchallenge.  It’s such a great time to get rid of a bunch of stuff.  It’s a nice excuse for me to do some spring cleaning at the same time, and it frees up space as well!  When my husband and I moved into our house two years ago, the H-word got thrown around a little bit by one/some of our friends (*whispers* hoarders) and ever since then I’ve been trying to purge the useless things in our lives as much as possible.  I’ve gotten rid of things between last April and this April, of course, but my MAJOR purge is in April.  This is the second annual declutter challenge I’ve done, and I’m looking forward to it. (And don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @Alysalovely 😉 )

FIVE: SELF-HOSTED WEBSITE!!
You’re probably wondering why my site looks like this right now.  It’s because I’ve been in the process of transferring it over to being totally self-hosted for the last week and a half… and believe me, it’s been a process!! It finally got fully transferred over last night (yay!!) so I’m going to be prettifying it later on today when it’s not 1:00am with a baby crying to be fed at the same time.  I’m excited that it’s all there though and that I can go forward and make the website even more me!  🙂

April Declutter Challenge!

April Declutter Challenge

We’re still more than a week away from April, but I thought I’d get a head start on planning for my challenge this year!

Last year, I introduced the April Declutter Challenge! I did my own variation of the minimalist challenge over the month of April, where on the first day, I decluttered 30 things, on the second day, 29 things, and so on and so forth.  I would like to do it again this year!  I am going to change the rules a little bit, however.  (If you’d like to see the rules I made for the challenge last year, check them out here!)

The Rules:

  1. Remove items from living space
Out of sight, out of mind.  My plan this year is a little different than it was last year.  My rules from last year indicated that I gave things to the thrift store on a weekly basis.  But then later, in talking with a friend, I learned that some of the things I had been giving away could have been of use to her.  So, instead of immediately getting everything out of the house completely this year, I’m going to put everything aside and then invite friends over for a sort of rummage “sale” in my living room.  If there are things people want, they can have them! And anything left over will go to the thrift store at the end of the month.
And, in the meantime, I will be keeping things out of our regular living spaces, probably in the back porch or shed. Or maybe basement.  Depending on how I feel at the time.
  2. Bring garbage away daily
This one is the same as last year.  Decluttering counts for garbage, too… but why save it.  Take it out!!
  3. Avoid buying things
This one will be the most difficult, but I don’t see the point in getting rid of hundreds of items from my home if I’m just going to be bringing other things into it at the same time.  It makes no sense!  Obvious things like food and hygeine necessities are clearly excluded from this rule.
  4. Share your successes
I really enjoyed going on Instagram and sharing the things I was decluttering last year.  Join me! Use the hashtag #AprilDeclutterChallenge on Instagram and see what kinds of things other people are getting rid of!  I’ll be posting @Alysalovely.

What counts towards decluttering?
-Things you’ve borrowed from someone and are returning to them
-Things that are still in good working order that someone else can use
-Things that are total crap
-Actual garbage

So, who’s with me? 🙂

Alysa

Declutter Challenge Update: Week 4

April Declutter Challenge

Well, it’s the first day of May today, which means that I finished my declutter challenge yesterday.  It was a pretty crazy/fun ride.  I got rid of a lot of stuff that I had been collecting, some of it I hadn’t even used for years and years.  It was so great to be able to look through my things and unload needless items.

If you followed along, or if you participated some days, that is so awesome!  I hope that you feel as good about the challenge as I did.  It was so nice to be able to do this.

Last year, when we moved from our one bedroom apartment into our 4 bedroom/2 story house, one of our friends who was helping us move made a joke about us being horders.  I’m not going to say that I did this challenge BECAUSE of that comment, but it was definitely a driving factor.  I hope that this challenge will help make me more mindful in my spending as well.  I don’t need lots and lots of things, and I’d rather have quality over quantity, something that I never really thought about before.  When I was younger, I would go shopping and just buy buy buy for the sake of buying.  When I went shopping, I needed to bring something home with me.  I am so glad that I am not like that anymore.

If you’d like to see all the photos from the challenge, check out the hashtag: #AprilDeclutterChallenge or follow me on instagram @Alysalovely

Now the real challenge will be: can I do this again next year?? 😉

Alysa

Declutter Challenge Update: Week 3

April Declutter Challenge

This week was Week 3 of the April Declutter Challenge, and it was pretty good, though it felt really short.  It felt a lot like Monday started and then I blinked and it was Friday.  I definitely thought that by the end of this challenge, I would be having trouble scraping together enough stuff for each day, but that is not the case at all.  For the most part, I am able to find more than I need for the challenge every day. It’s either a good thing, or a bad thing.. depending on how you look at it 😉

I’ve also started doing more than one area in a day.  I planned out my week with each thing that I’m going to be decluttering each day.  One day was nail polish, one day was my makeup drawer, etc.  Since I have less stuff to declutter every day, and I’m doing smaller things.. I’m able to do the decluttering for a few days at once!

So far, I’m really enjoying this though.  It feels nice to just unload so much stuff that I didn’t really realize was weighing me down.  I definitely feel lighter at this point, and I’m so glad to get rid of all these things that I never even looked at or used anymore.  So great!

Declutter Challenge Update: Week 2

April Declutter Challenge

The second full week of the declutter challenge was a little bit more challenging.  After I finished doing my closet, I had to actually write out  a list of other areas of my home that I’d like to declutter.  It was hard to think of all the different places to go through at first, but as I started writing, I came up with more and more places that I need to sort through.

Here is the list of things that I have already decluttered:

  • closet
  • t-shirt drawer(s)
  • pajama drawer
  • socks/tights
  • intimates/bathing suits
  • purses
  • books
  • top of my vanity
  • jewellery drawer(s)
  • living room
  • linens
  • box of sewing projects
  • box of short, pants & skirts

List of things I still need to declutter:

  • shoes
  • scarves
  • crafts
  • kitchen
  • coats
  • makeup
  • earrings
  • hairbands
  • gift bags
  • office
  • tv room
  • dvds
  • knick-knacks
  • bathroom
  • nail polish

You can follow along on Instagram @Alysalovely or #AprilDeclutterChallenge 🙂

I didn’t get a chance to bring everything out yet, but a friend of mine picked up some of the bags for a rummage sale that’s being put on by Masterworks Dance Studio!  Check out information on the sale here! And if you’re in Winnipeg, check it out this weekend.
What have you decluttered this week?

Declutter Challenge Update!

April Declutter Challenge

Well, it’s just over a week into the April Declutter Challenge, and it’s been pretty fun so far!  I’ve managed to declutter the exact amount per day, or a little bit more!  I was able to bring everything to donate to the thrift store yesterday, and it felt good to be able to get everything out of the house.

I’ve been sharing everything on Instagram @Alysalovely, so if you’re interested in following along, feel free to add me there.  Here are a few of the pictures that I’ve taken over the last 10 days:

It’s been really freeing to get rid of so much clutter that I didn’t even know had been taking up space in my home.  Like really, why do I need 4 extra pairs of sunglasses?  Those aren’t even all of the sunglasses that I found.  Those are just the ones I found that day!  AND I was still able to keep 2 or 3 pairs.  Yikes!  😉  We ended up bringing 7 full bags of stuff to the thrift store though, and it felt really good to be able to give so much away.

Wish me luck with the rest of the month, feel free to join in at any time and be sure to tag your photos to join in #AprilDeclutterChallenge!

xoxo,
Alysa
