Our Christmas Tree 2016

I love our tree this year so much.  It’s HUGE!  Andrew went on the first day they were available, and picked the tallest one he could find.  It was packaged so nicely that it led us to believe that it would be a tall skinny tree.  Well, we unwrapped it and KA-POW! GIANT!  It takes up so much of the living room, but I don’t care. I love it so much!

And every year Christmas with Autumn is more fun than the last.  This year, she’s more aware of things.  She was there when Andrew brought home this tree, so any time anyone mentions the tree, she talks about how Daddy brought it home haha. It’s really cute!

what’s in my garden?

So, I finally got around to planting some things in my garden!  Last year, we planted a few different things to pretty great success.. so this year we’re (mostly) planting different things.

Here are a few of the things I have in my garden:

gardening

MINT!! We had a mint plant last year, and it was AWESOME! I loved being able to have mojitos whenever we wanted.  We had them quite a bit, and used a lot of our mint.  I hope that this mint plant thrives like it did last year.  We were even able to share a bit with our friends so they could re-plant it in their garden.  It didn’t survive the winter because we had it in a planter box and the area it was planted in froze.  I’m already excited about this one though.

gardening

This year we’re trying our hands at a tomato plant!  We’ll see if we get anything.  If we do, great. If we don’t.. well, that’s ok, too!  It’s a little bit of a learning curve.  Considering I killed all the plants we had the first summer in the house, that should tell you about the state of my thumb (aka not so green) but we figured we’d give it a go.  Wish us luck with these, I’ve heard that tomatoes are a little more difficult.

in the garden

A hanging plant, we received this as a gift for our 4th anniversary, because apparently the gift for your fourth year of marriage is a plant.  Really crossing my fingers that I can keep this one alive, because the hanging plants we had our first year of living in the house were the first to go.  Did you know that they need to be watered daily?? I didn’t.  I learned that after we received this plant.  I’m trying my best to actually water them though, so we’ll see 😉

in the garden

Marigolds and Alyssums!  So far, these are looking a little worse for wear.  I’ve been watering them every day and I hope I can turn it around.. but we’ll see.  Taking care of plants is HARD!!

Not pictured: BEE plants!  I signed up for free seeds from a couple of places that are trying to save the bees.  I’ve planted the seeds, and have been watering the area lots.. so hopefully something will sprout up soon and I’ll be able to share those pictures, too.

What are you planting in your garden this year?

April Declutter Challenge – Week 1

April Declutter Challenge

Here we are one week into April, and 7 days worth of decluttering!  At this point, if I were only getting rid of the specified amount per day, I would have given away/thrown out/donated 189 things.  I know that I have decluttered more than that though, because most days I find more than the required amount that I no longer want or need.  I just have too much stuff, so this challenge has already been so refreshing.

In the last week, the focus has been on my bedroom.  So I’ve decluttered my closet, (of clothes, shoes, purses, hats and belts), my dresser, my hairbands and nail polishes, and my bedside table.  Some places had more to get rid of than others, that’s for sure.. but there was also a lot that I felt I needed to keep, for sentimental reasons or others.  For example, the dress that I was wearing when Andrew proposed.  I can’t give that away!  A few things got demoted and are now in the costume bag in our basement, other things I’m giving to my daughter, such as a Cinderella purse and a Tinkerbell purse.  She seems to like them already, too.

Here are some of the pictures I’ve shared on Instagram of the things I’ve decluttered:

Almost half of my hairbands.  Mostly ones that I don’t ever wear because they are too small for my head and so they pinch me and give me a headache.  And some of my nail colours!

SO MANY HANGERS!! I was living with the impression that we didn’t have enough hangers, so I had been doubling and tripling up on some of the hangers I had in my closet.  Well, it turned out, there was no need for that.  I’ve done my closet with the colour scheme of black/pink, and Andrew’s with the colour scheme of green/white, and now all the hangers match and it makes me so happy!  The little baby hangers already left the house, they went to someone who is selling old baby clothes at one of the huge used baby stuff sales in the city this month.  The hangers here are already spoken for as well!

If you’d like to follow along on Instagram, be sure to follow me @Alysalovely, and follow this challenge using the hashtag #AprilDeclutterChallenge.  You can also check out a play-by-play approach of the befores and afters on my snapchat! My username is Alysalovely

If you’ve joined in, how are you doing with decluttering?  Don’t you feel totally refreshed?

my new favourite social networks

my new favourite social networks

You may have noticed this, but I am pretty big into social media.  I like using Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, and Facebook, and anytime something new comes out, I feel compelled to download it and try it out.  It’s especially nice that it’s something I’m able to do on the phone that I have.  I’ve recently discovered (and re-discovered) a couple of really great social media platforms I’d like to share with you here! Maybe you’ll be interested in trying them out as well 😉

PEACH
I am really enjoying Peach.  It’s a lot of fun!  If I had to describe it by comparing it to another social media platform, I would say that it’s similar to twitter, except that you can use more than 140 characters, and there are gifs!! As many gifs as your heart desires!!  There are a number of other fun features you can do on there as well.
You can find Peach on the App store as well as on Google Play 🙂

SNAPCHAT
I am re-discovering snapchat and LOVING it!  I am having so much fun with adding to my story throughout the day, as well as seeing what other people are doing in their day to day lives.  I really like it because it’s so in the moment, there’s not really tons of time to make the image super perfect so it’s more casual and real than some of my other social media obsessions.  But I love this!  I also love the fact that I can send pictures and videos of our day to my husband while he’s at work.  He might not see them till he gets home, but it’s nice to be able to share a little bit of our day while he’s gone.
I believe this can also be found in both the app store and on Google Play
My username is alysalovely 😉

 INSTAGRAM
Instagram is still my first love.  I use it multiple times per day, and I love seeing what other people are posting on there.
It is also in both the app store and on Google Play
Shocker! My username is alysalovely 😉

What are your favourite social media platforms?

This year’s Christmas Tree!

We’ve had our tree up since the end of November, but I’m still so excited about it and want to show it off a little bit.  We got it at Ikea!  I love that Ikea sells trees.  The money goes to Scouts Canada, and you get a $20 off coupon when you spend $70 in January.  So basically, if you can manage to spend $70 at Ikea in January, your tree is free 😉  (Like it’s hard to spend $70 at Ikea haha)

Here are a few pictures I took of our tree for 2015:

Fort Whyte Alive

In my husband’s last week of parental leave before he had to go back to work, we got to go do a few different things as a family! One of the things we did was go to a little natural recreation centre called Fort Whyte Alive.  It’s so much fun there.  I used to go all the time as a kid, and hadn’t really been there too much in the last few years.  Though, last fall I went there on a field trip with school!  This time we were able to take our time there and take some pictures.

Here are some of the pictures we took:

It was a really fun day!

If you’ve never been, you should really check it out.  In the fall, they have an event where you can watch the Geese flying south for the winter, while eating dinner.  It’s really cool to see.

Canadian Human Rights Museum Visit

Last week, we finally got to go visit the new Canadian Human Rights Museum that had opened here almost a year ago.  It was so much fun to be able to go see the new National Museum that had opened right here in Winnipeg!  It was interesting to see what the building looked like from the inside, too, because we had basically watched it being built.  We drive by there so often, that we saw a lot of the steps that went into the buildings construction.  Here are some of the pictures I took at the museum:

They had a really interesting interactive exhibit there where images of bubbles appear under you when you go in! It was fun to join in on the dancing already happening there.

Breastfeeding at the Canadian Human Rights Museum was particularily important to me because nursing freely is definitely a human right, and women have the right to feed their babies wherever they are and wherever they need to be fed.  This was taken in the Garden of Contemplation.  No one batted at eye at what I was doing there, which was really nice.

Overall, I found it to be interesting, but kind of sparse.  For such a giant building, I thought that there would be more in it.  The walkways were cool and everything, but it felt like there was a lot missing.  It also felt like there was a lot of emphasis on certain things, but way less on others.  It would be really difficult to decide which human rights events were “important” enough to warrant a bigger exhibit about it, yet some were given that.  I don’t know.  I enjoyed going, and I’m glad we went, but I felt a little bit let down by it.  It took forever to be built, and a lot went into getting it here, and it didn’t seem like there was actually very much to it.

If you’ve been to the Canadian Human Rights Museum, what did you think of it?

Road Trip Observations

Parliament of Canada

Inside the Parliament Building

Chicago Skyline

Here are some more of our road trip photos!  After Niagara Falls, we didn’t really take too many pictures.  At that point, we were just trying to get home, so we didn’t think to take out the camera.  But I do have some observations about travelling through Ontario and parts of the north United States.

  1.  Ontario announces itself a lot
Especially on the trans-Canada highway, it seemed like every 5km or so, there was a sign that said “Ontario”.  I found this particularily interesting because there was a trip I took with some friends when I was younger where we were SURE that we were in Alberta, and we were PISSED because Alberta didn’t welcome us.  Then, it turned out we were still in Saskatchewan.  If Saskatchewan had the thing where they announced where we were every so often, we wouldn’t have been so mad haha
  2. Americans talk on their phones while driving, A LOT
It was actually pretty ridiculous.  When we were driving around Chicago, there were giant signs that said how many people had DIED that year in that one state from texting and driving.  And the number was REALLY HIGH.  Get off your phones!! Come on!  It was like 500 or something people, and it was July.  Like seriously? Get off your phones.  Whatever you have to say is not that important, I promise.  I kNOW that it’s illegal there to text and drive, too.
  3. Motorcyclists don’t wear helmets in the states
I don’t think I saw a single motorcyclist in the states wearing a helmet.  I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to do that here, so it was really weird for me to see that.  And they still drove really recklessly, too.  It was pretty scary tbh.

Road Trip: Niagara Falls

At the end of last month, we went on our first family road trip!  It was a lot of fun, and we got to see some of the parts of Canada (and the U.S.) that we hadn’t seen as a couple before.  One of the places we went was Niagara Falls!  I had been there before, years ago, and it was my husband’s first time there!

Here are a few of the pictures we took while we were there:

Ontario Road Trip

We just got back last Sunday from a whirlwind road trip of Ontario (with a little bit of the states thrown in there).  We decided to head East this year because as a couple we’ve only ever travelled West before.  We thought it might be fun to go East this time!  The other draw for us is that my sister lives in Toronto, and an Aunt and Uncle plus a really good friend who live in the GTA, so we wanted to visit them all!  Plus, Andrew had never been to Ottawa or Niagara Falls before, so we definitely wanted to check those out.

I don’t know if it’s because it was such a short trip, or because we had a baby with us, but I feel like we didn’t take very many pictures, and that makes me kind of sad.

Here are some of the photos we got along the way there:

ontari-ari-o!

night danger

Funny story. We saw this sign a LOT. And for the longest time, I tried to get a picture of it, but my phone couldn’t open fast enough and it would be gone.  For this picture, we saw it coming and Andrew slowed down so much that we actually stopped… and I STILL missed it!! haha so he had to back up so I could get out and take this picture.  Good thing there was no one else on the road just then 😉

We were able to stop and dip our toes in Lake Superior.  We thought we might be able to do this with the other Great Lakes, too, but it didn’t work out.
