Winnipeg Holiday Gift Guide

Winnipeg Holiday Gift Guide

My goal for this Christmas was to buy local.  And I don’t mean anyone who sells anything locally, but local makers & artists, local Winnipeg institutions and shops, and let’s face it, I wanted to go to as many craft sales as possible.  I think that for the most part I have been successful!  Here are a few of my favourite local shops/makers. (and, to the friends and family reading, sorry if this ruins the surprise just a little when you open up something from one of these places come Christmas 😉 )

  1. Coal & Canary

I’ve been following Coal & Canary on Instagram for quite a while now (and coveting their beautiful candles), and I was so happy to be able to pick some up at a recent craft show.  I can’t wait to see my loved ones faces when they open their candles!  These candles are basically selling like hot cakes here in Winnipeg.  EVERYONE wants them.
Check them out on their website: Coal & Canary

  2. Tiny Feast

Tiny Feast is another one of my Instagram faves.  I’m a sucker for stationary, pens, organizers and planners, and this store is pretty much the perfect one for me because these are the things they sell!  Their shop is adorable and right downtown, so it’s super easy to get to.  I could spend all day there, there is so much to look at.  It’s really hard not to just buy everything, though
Check them out on their website: Tiny Feast

  3. McNally Robinson

    So. #Bookmark or #dogear?

A post shared by McNally Robinson Booksellers (@mcnallyrobinson) on

McNally Robinson has been one of my favourite stores since I was a kid.  I love books and reading, and try to get as many of my books from here as possible.  And how can I do Christmas presents without buying books?  Exactly. I can’t!
Check them out on their website: McNally Robinson

  4. Red Lake Coffee Co.

Red Lake Coffee Company is fairly new to Winnipeg, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about them.  They are a give-profit company, so they give their profits to local organizations that help people who are struggling.  Which is especially cool to purchase from at Christmas.  They deliver to the Winnipeg area as well, so I ordered it and it came that Friday! This is a very exciting company and I can’t wait to try their coffee.
Check them out on their website: Red Lake Coffee Co.

  5. Out of the Blue

This has been one of my favourite shops since I was in high school, and I’ve always loved everything they carry there.  Basically, if you need to find something for me for Christmas, if it’s from Out of the Blue, I will love it. 😉
Check them out on their website: Out of the Blue

What Winnipeg shops and makers would you add to this list? What’s your favourite local shop?

Happy (almost) December!

It’s December tomorrow! Which means it’s totally socially acceptable everywhere to talk about Christmas, and be ready for Christmas, and have a Christmas tree!  We went to get our Christmas tree yesterday, we also went and visited Santa for Autumn’s first time.  She wasn’t really a fan, but we don’t generally let strange men hold her, so it’s not really that surprising.  Plus, she was tired :p

I had a goal in November to get my Christmas shopping done this month, and I’ve pretty much accomplished that!  Aside from a couple of small things that I still need to pick up, everything is ready to go.  All I have to do now is wrap it up and put it under the tree.  All I have left to do is the homemade stuff, which hopefully won’t take too long, but we’ll see.

Otherwise, I’m just ready to hang out, enjoy my newly decorated, beautiful smelling tree, listen to Christmas music, and drink hot chocolate.  Gotta love December!  PLUS!! The best part.  I’m not in school this year, so I don’t have to think about finals I can just think about Christmas!  So happy about that, I can’t even begin to describe how happy that makes me.

Here are some other things making me happy this week:

  1. One day left to sign up for Dressember!
This will be my third year participating in Dressember, and this year I’m wearing one dress all month.  It’ll be so great!  You should sign up 😉 Alternatively, you can donate here!
  2. My brother got engaged!!
I’m so excited for them! I love my new sister in law! <3
  3. My David’s Tea Advent Calendar
We got it at the beginning of November, so I’ve been waiting all month to be able to make the tea.  I can’t wait till tomorrow.  It smells amazing, and I’ve mostly been able to keep what kinds of teas there are a surprise

What are you excited for this week/month?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  It was a (mostly) beautiful weekend here! Hope it was great where you are.

Here are a few of the things I’m thankful for this year:

  1. My daughter
She’s almost a year old, so this was her first Thanksgiving.  It was so fun celebrating with her.
  2. My husband
    <3
  3. My family
  4. Health
I keep thinking about all the health-related issues I’ve had this year, so I’m really thankful for my health right now.
  5. My husband’s new job
He loves it, and that makes me really happy.

What are you thankful for this year?

happy October!

Last week, I shared a list of a few of the things I’m excited for about Autumn, and it’s finally October.  Or, ALREADY October.  How? This just happened!

I love October though, too.  To quote Anne Shirley, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are October’s.”  It’s true. October is pretty nice.  The thing I’m most excited about is Halloween though.  There will be a lot about Halloween here over the next month, so I hope you’re as excited as I am 😉

This month is also the federal election in Canada.  Honestly, I’m just ready to vote now!! It’ll be a couple of weeks yet, but I just wanna vote.

What are you most excited about in October?

yay autumn!

This past Wednesday was the official first day of autumn!  I’m even more excited about fall this year, and a lot of it has to do with the fact that my daughter has the same name as the season.  Everywhere I look, people are writing about things to do in autumn, and fun things about autumn.  I love that!  It makes it more fun for me for sure!

Here are a few other things I’m excited about for this autumn:

  1. Halloween
It’s Autumn’s first Halloween!  I’m so excited to make her costume, and dress up with her.  I kind of want to have a few different costumes for her, so we can go to a couple of things.  I think that would be super fun!
  2. Fun fall activities
Stuff that doesn’t seem that exciting when you don’t have kids, is going to be so much fun this year with Autumn!  I can’t wait to show her the crunchy leaves, and take her to a pumpkin patch, or to a corn maze.
  3. No school!
It’s so nice to not be in school this year.  It’s definitely a change from last year!  I’m really enjoying being done school 🙂

What are you excited most excited for this season?

Happy Day!

Monday again! How was your weekend? We had a great weekend. We got to celebrate with two of our friends as they got married, and we went to a dinner with my in-laws at a cool Mennonite museum here in town.  Busy weekend, but great!

Here are some other things that made me happy this week:

  1. Cuddle + Kind dolls
these dolls are SO stinkin’ cute!  I love that they give proceeds to help others as well.
  2. Remember Breaker High?
aka one of Ryan Gosling’s first shows? aka the show that made everyone wish THEIR high school was on a cruise ship?  Here’s what everyone looks like now 🙂
  3. Keep kids warm and safe in the car seat
Car seat safety is so important to me, and I love the tips they share here.

Have a great week!

Happy Day!

Another busy week and another busy weekend!  This month is going to zoom by, I just know it.  It already is!  This weekend, we celebrated a friend’s birthday, another friend’s baby shower, and then my birthday again with my parents/in-laws/grandparents!  It was a lot of fun, but I’m definitely ready to relax a little bit.  Now I can start thinking about the next event 😉

Here are some other things that made me happy this week:

  1. The Problem with Gender Neutral
Generally speaking, gender neutral means the masculine version, and as a woman/the mother of a girl, I have a problem with that.
  2. Help Aubree Shake It Off with Taylor Swift
This little girl has a rare type of cancer, and her one wish is to sing “Shake it Off” with Taylor Swift! Like the group, share the info on fb, tweet it, lets make this happen!!
  3. A Bar based on Harry Potter
I want to go to there!!
  4. How to Beyonce
    enough said.

All of this is so true.

Have a great week, loves!

xoxo,
Alysa

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday!  How was your week?
I had an inadvertent blog hiatus, for the simple reason that last week was crazy busy.  It was weird though, I had some stuff planned to write about but just never found the time to.  It was a great week though! I went to a baby shower of a good friend of mine, and we went to a beautiful wedding of some friends of ours.  It was lovely.

We have another busy week this week, and another wedding this Saturday, but it’ll be a great week. I love weddings <3

Here are some other things making me happy this week:

  1. An easy way for Canadians to register to vote
It will also tell you if you need to register, or if you already are registered.
  2. Pumpkin Pie Cupcakes
I’m not generally a huge fan of the pumpkin spice trend, but I LOVE pumpkin pie! I had it as my birthday “cake” last year haha

that video is hilarious.  to be fair, liquid eyeliner is HARD!! 😉

Have a great week!!

Happy Terry Fox Day!

Happy Terry Fox Day!  We just got back from our road trip yesterday, and the August Long Weekend’s new official day (in Manitoba) was great news to come home to!

Our trip was a lot of fun.  Lots of highlights, lots of things to talk about.  But that’s it’s own post 😉  For now, though, I just have to talk about that photo up there.  My gem of a find at the thrift store I went to in Burlington, Ontario.  I had been looking for Dream Phone for years.  YEARS!  I haven’t played it in years either.  I couldn’t believe it when I found it!  I’m still so jazzed about it.  AND, the bonus is, all the pieces are there and it actually still works!  Love it!

Here are some other things making me happy this week:

  1. Terry Fox Day!
It’s too good and I love it.  There’s more information about Terry Fox and about the decision in the link 🙂
  2. What to do with a baby
    This post is very informative.
  3. 44 Signs that you should wear a crop top
One of the most important being “because you want to.”
  4. If Disney Princesses were Moms
These are so freaking cute.  I love them so much!  My favourite is how Rapunzel is shown with no kids in the picture, because she’s a free-range parent.  It’s too good.
  5. Kristen Bell is the best
This story made me ugly cry tbh.  She’s just such a sweetheart <3

Have a great week!

Alysa

Happy Day!

How was your weekend? Hoping it was great!  Ours was pretty good.  The weekend before was pretty hectic with three weddings, so it was great to relax this weekend and do pretty much nothing.

I have to say though, one of the biggest things that happened in the last week is that I finally got a Sakura Bloom ring sling of my very own!! I LOVE it! It’s in the picture up there.  It’s so fun to use and so pretty.  I’m so excited about it, especially for the summer and as Autumn gets bigger.

Here are a few other things I’ve enjoyed this past week:

1. My love for Target continues to grow
I love this story for so many reasons, but it makes me excited to go breastfeed at Target when I’m in the states this summer.  Great policy on that!

2. Becoming My Complete Self
I love this post on the Coffee and Crumbs website.  It really resonated with me

3. 10 Tips for Road-Tripping With A Baby
We’ll need this soon! It was so handy to find this.

4. How to get your body “Beach Ready”
I think I can say that my body is beach ready! I just need to get to a beach 😉

5. Some friends are trying to record an album
They are part of a worship band who would like to actually record an album, so that is their indie go-go page

6. 20 Questions with the Fringe Festival’s Jennifer Cheslock
She was my boss last summer and she’s so great!

Have a great week!

Alysa
