1 // Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go has now been available legitimately in Canada since last Sunday, but I have yet to actually get it to work. I think it’s my phone. It’s too old.  It looked like a lot of fun, and I’m so glad that it’s bringing a lot of different people together.  I missed the Pokemon faze growing up, too.. so I’m mostly okay with not being able to play this.  It would have been fun, but oh well.  Andrew has it and plays it, so I’ll play through him instead.  And keep using my phone for snapchat 😉

cloth diapers

2 // Adventures in Cloth Diapers

We’ve had Autumn in cloth diapers pretty much since she was born (aside from over Christmas that year, and for her first few meconium poops). And apparently, I had been doing something wrong with my wash, because the diapers were smelly, even right when they were “clean”, and they were starting to affect Autumn negatively.  When that happens, the thing to do is to do a full strip and bleach.  It’s a way to “reset” the diapers back to the way they were originally.  It’s not something you want to do all the time because it takes a really long time.  But the diapers smelled really bad, and I didn’t want her to be in disposables forever, so that’s what I did this week!

3 // Babywearing to the Rescue

Especially with two kids, babywearing has been my saving grace.  I’m actually able to go out, take the kids to the park, go for walks, and, most importantly, get things done while my babies are napping.  It’s incredible and I love it.  My current fave is my Boba stretchy wrap.  It’s so handy and I feel that Aiden is super secure in there.  Plus, then I’m hands free to be a person and do stuff.  I love it!

mama's night out

4 // RAW: Winnipeg presents REVEAL

Last night, my friend had an art show through a group called RAW.  It was so much fun!  Not only was it a wonderful way to support a good friend of mine, but I also got to go out by myself… as an adult. Without a kid strapped to me. To a BAR!  It was pretty much amazing, and though I didn’t stay the whole time or for all that long, I will have to do things like this more often.  It made me feel like a real actual human person, instead of just the sidekick to my children.

5 // Alysalovely Littles

I think I’m almost ready to actually start something here!  A few months before Aiden was born, I got this idea to start a little side business, and I’ve been dreaming about it and working on it for a while.  I’m actually able to work on it on a more regular basis now, especially now that I can baby wear during naps.  If you want more updates on this, check out the instagram @Alysalovelylittles <3

Hope you had a lovely week!

Our Canada Day Long Weekend

A photo posted by Alysa Friesen (@alysalovely) on

This past weekend was Canada Day, and it was lovely!  We were able to go to Victoria Beach and spend time with my parents, as well as one of my aunts and one of her friends.  It was a total blast!

A photo posted by Alysa Friesen (@alysalovely) on

My favourite parts were definitely on the beach, but here are some other highlights of the weekend:

  1. Playing Cards Against Humanity with my parents and my aunt!  My aunt’s friend had played before, but no one else had and it was a riot.  It was hilarious!  Plus, hearing some of the things on the card coming out of my parents mouths.  So much fun.  I wish I had taken more pictures haha
  2. Autumn had her very first face cookie from the VB bakery!  Last year when we went, she was too little to have cookies from there, so this was perfect.  And, of course, she loved it.
  3. Going to the beach!  And watching my daughter and husband play in the sand together, as pictured above.  So great!

How was your long weekend?

Happy Day: what’s the up?

flowering tree

It’s been a few days since I’ve posted, so I thought I’d do a little catch up!  It’s been a really busy few days, too.  Of waiting, of celebrating, of waiting more…

  1. I had two fetal assessments last week, and they measured my baby at 8lb 11oz. Which isn’t too bad! And good fluid levels.  What was nice was that Andrew got to come and see the baby in the ultrasound, since he hadn’t seen him yet.
  2. We celebrated all day Saturday, pretty much.  We had a first birthday party to attend, and then a graduation party! It was a great day filled with friends and family.
  3. On Sunday, I laboured all day and gave birth!! This is definitely the biggest thing that happened in the last few days haha.  But he’s here, he’s wonderful, he’s healthy & I love him so much.  I’ll post more details later.
  4. Getting settled as a family of 4 has been good so far.  Looking forward to seeing how my two children get along with each other as they grow <3

Hope your weekend was excellent as well!

Five on Friday

It has been quite the week this week, so I thought I’d share a few things that have been exciting or brought us some happiness!  It’s been super busy, but all in a good way, and I’m excited to see what April will bring!  There’s still lots to do before the baby comes in May, but the fact that it’s now April really lights a fire under my butt to get some of these things done.  Here are 5 exciting things about this week:

If you know me, you know that I love Harry Potter.  And you probably also partied with me at a midnight release party before, but if you haven’t, now is your chance!  McNally Robinson is having a midnight party for the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and I NEED to go!  You can find more information here, but it’s going to be a blast and I can’t wait!  I will bring a 2 month old baby with me, don’t think I won’t!!

I’ve been waiting for this book for a couple of months now, and I’m so excited that it’s finally here and that I have it!  It came out Tuesday, but McNally didn’t have it in stock until Thursday, but it doesn’t matter because it’s in my hot little hands now and I am really enjoying reading through it!

This week has been filled with getting the decor and stuff ready for the new baby’s room, and I’m so happy with the way it’s been going.  We’re not going to have a crib in there for a while, but we’ve got the bassinet in there for now, as well as the dresser/changing table.  I just need to do a few canvas pieces and then hang everything and it’ll be done! This is so nice because we didn’t really have a “theme” for Autumn’s room beforehand, just a colour.  It’s nice that this is coming along and it’ll be a real room even before this little one gets to sleep in there

April Declutter Challenge
My declutter challenge starts today! If you’re wanting to join, make sure you share the things you’re getting rid of on instagram and use #aprildeclutterchallenge.  It’s such a great time to get rid of a bunch of stuff.  It’s a nice excuse for me to do some spring cleaning at the same time, and it frees up space as well!  When my husband and I moved into our house two years ago, the H-word got thrown around a little bit by one/some of our friends (*whispers* hoarders) and ever since then I’ve been trying to purge the useless things in our lives as much as possible.  I’ve gotten rid of things between last April and this April, of course, but my MAJOR purge is in April.  This is the second annual declutter challenge I’ve done, and I’m looking forward to it. (And don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @Alysalovely 😉 )

You’re probably wondering why my site looks like this right now.  It’s because I’ve been in the process of transferring it over to being totally self-hosted for the last week and a half… and believe me, it’s been a process!! It finally got fully transferred over last night (yay!!) so I’m going to be prettifying it later on today when it’s not 1:00am with a baby crying to be fed at the same time.  I’m excited that it’s all there though and that I can go forward and make the website even more me!  🙂

Winnipeg Holiday Gift Guide

Winnipeg Holiday Gift Guide

My goal for this Christmas was to buy local.  And I don’t mean anyone who sells anything locally, but local makers & artists, local Winnipeg institutions and shops, and let’s face it, I wanted to go to as many craft sales as possible.  I think that for the most part I have been successful!  Here are a few of my favourite local shops/makers. (and, to the friends and family reading, sorry if this ruins the surprise just a little when you open up something from one of these places come Christmas 😉 )

  1. Coal & Canary

I’ve been following Coal & Canary on Instagram for quite a while now (and coveting their beautiful candles), and I was so happy to be able to pick some up at a recent craft show.  I can’t wait to see my loved ones faces when they open their candles!  These candles are basically selling like hot cakes here in Winnipeg.  EVERYONE wants them.
Check them out on their website: Coal & Canary

  2. Tiny Feast

Tiny Feast is another one of my Instagram faves.  I’m a sucker for stationary, pens, organizers and planners, and this store is pretty much the perfect one for me because these are the things they sell!  Their shop is adorable and right downtown, so it’s super easy to get to.  I could spend all day there, there is so much to look at.  It’s really hard not to just buy everything, though
Check them out on their website: Tiny Feast

  3. McNally Robinson

    So. #Bookmark or #dogear?

A post shared by McNally Robinson Booksellers (@mcnallyrobinson) on

McNally Robinson has been one of my favourite stores since I was a kid.  I love books and reading, and try to get as many of my books from here as possible.  And how can I do Christmas presents without buying books?  Exactly. I can’t!
Check them out on their website: McNally Robinson

  4. Red Lake Coffee Co.

Red Lake Coffee Company is fairly new to Winnipeg, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about them.  They are a give-profit company, so they give their profits to local organizations that help people who are struggling.  Which is especially cool to purchase from at Christmas.  They deliver to the Winnipeg area as well, so I ordered it and it came that Friday! This is a very exciting company and I can’t wait to try their coffee.
Check them out on their website: Red Lake Coffee Co.

  5. Out of the Blue

This has been one of my favourite shops since I was in high school, and I’ve always loved everything they carry there.  Basically, if you need to find something for me for Christmas, if it’s from Out of the Blue, I will love it. 😉
Check them out on their website: Out of the Blue

What Winnipeg shops and makers would you add to this list? What’s your favourite local shop?

Happy (almost) December!

It’s December tomorrow! Which means it’s totally socially acceptable everywhere to talk about Christmas, and be ready for Christmas, and have a Christmas tree!  We went to get our Christmas tree yesterday, we also went and visited Santa for Autumn’s first time.  She wasn’t really a fan, but we don’t generally let strange men hold her, so it’s not really that surprising.  Plus, she was tired :p

I had a goal in November to get my Christmas shopping done this month, and I’ve pretty much accomplished that!  Aside from a couple of small things that I still need to pick up, everything is ready to go.  All I have to do now is wrap it up and put it under the tree.  All I have left to do is the homemade stuff, which hopefully won’t take too long, but we’ll see.

Otherwise, I’m just ready to hang out, enjoy my newly decorated, beautiful smelling tree, listen to Christmas music, and drink hot chocolate.  Gotta love December!  PLUS!! The best part.  I’m not in school this year, so I don’t have to think about finals I can just think about Christmas!  So happy about that, I can’t even begin to describe how happy that makes me.

Here are some other things making me happy this week:

  1. One day left to sign up for Dressember!
This will be my third year participating in Dressember, and this year I’m wearing one dress all month.  It’ll be so great!  You should sign up 😉 Alternatively, you can donate here!
  2. My brother got engaged!!
I’m so excited for them! I love my new sister in law! <3
  3. My David’s Tea Advent Calendar
We got it at the beginning of November, so I’ve been waiting all month to be able to make the tea.  I can’t wait till tomorrow.  It smells amazing, and I’ve mostly been able to keep what kinds of teas there are a surprise

What are you excited for this week/month?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  It was a (mostly) beautiful weekend here! Hope it was great where you are.

Here are a few of the things I’m thankful for this year:

  1. My daughter
She’s almost a year old, so this was her first Thanksgiving.  It was so fun celebrating with her.
  2. My husband
  3. My family
  4. Health
I keep thinking about all the health-related issues I’ve had this year, so I’m really thankful for my health right now.
  5. My husband’s new job
He loves it, and that makes me really happy.

What are you thankful for this year?

happy October!

Last week, I shared a list of a few of the things I’m excited for about Autumn, and it’s finally October.  Or, ALREADY October.  How? This just happened!

I love October though, too.  To quote Anne Shirley, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are October’s.”  It’s true. October is pretty nice.  The thing I’m most excited about is Halloween though.  There will be a lot about Halloween here over the next month, so I hope you’re as excited as I am 😉

This month is also the federal election in Canada.  Honestly, I’m just ready to vote now!! It’ll be a couple of weeks yet, but I just wanna vote.

What are you most excited about in October?

yay autumn!

This past Wednesday was the official first day of autumn!  I’m even more excited about fall this year, and a lot of it has to do with the fact that my daughter has the same name as the season.  Everywhere I look, people are writing about things to do in autumn, and fun things about autumn.  I love that!  It makes it more fun for me for sure!

Here are a few other things I’m excited about for this autumn:

  1. Halloween
It’s Autumn’s first Halloween!  I’m so excited to make her costume, and dress up with her.  I kind of want to have a few different costumes for her, so we can go to a couple of things.  I think that would be super fun!
  2. Fun fall activities
Stuff that doesn’t seem that exciting when you don’t have kids, is going to be so much fun this year with Autumn!  I can’t wait to show her the crunchy leaves, and take her to a pumpkin patch, or to a corn maze.
  3. No school!
It’s so nice to not be in school this year.  It’s definitely a change from last year!  I’m really enjoying being done school 🙂

What are you excited most excited for this season?
