Socks: Le Chateau
Spent some more time today trying to raise money for RaY! I noticed some really interesting things about the student body in general. First of all, so many cell phones everywhere! At least 70-80% of the people who walked by were on their cell phones. And, I can’t say that I am not guilty of the same, either. I know that when I’m walking around campus, I usually have some kind of device in my hand. It’s like an extension of my hand, I need it there. It feels weird to not be carrying my iPod or cell phone.
Another thing I noticed was how shocked people were about the fact that students were sleeping outside. I guess that being on the University of Manitoba campus, and for the most part, being a student is so far removed from those who have no choice but to sleep outside on a nightly basis. But, at the end of the day and at the end of this week, how much of this will people remember? The goal of the U of M is to raise $20,000. We’re told that it’s all going to http://rayinc.ca/, but how much of it really is? The statistics for homeless youth in Winnipeg are staggering, but after this week is over, who will think about this?
When I was asking people for money, someone said something that stuck with me. He said “How about 24/7 for the homeless?”
At the end of these five days, those students are going to go back to their university student lives, maybe feeling a little more thankful for what they have, but we are still removed from actual homelessness. 5 days seems like nothing.
