I realized today what one of my biggest pet peeves is!  I cannot stand when people take pictures of strangers without their knowledge or permission and then post it on social media to  make fun of them.  I don’t understand how someone could do something like that, especially to someone that they don’t even know.

It seems like there are a lot of websites like that out there, too.  I have heard of several subreddits that are about just that! I think (hope) that they have been shut down now, but it doesn’t matter.. more will pop up.  Or, there’s websites showcasing the types of people who shop at Walmart. Or, there’s websites where you can submit pictures for other people’s dirty pleasures.  I am not going to link to any of these websites, because I don’t agree with what they are trying to do.

What is the purpose about putting others down in this way?  Seriously, I’d like to know!  To quote the great Tina Fey, “Calling somebody else fat won’t make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn’t make you any smarter.” And posting an unflattering picture of a stranger on the internet doesn’t make you more photogenic or likeable.  It just shows how petty and straight up mean you are.

Why don’t we try kindness instead.  If a girl is walking around with a tampon string hanging out, tell her. Don’t take a picture of it and share it with the world.  If you see someone who is overweight, mind your own business. You don’t know anything about that person.

How would you feel if one of your friends linked you to a picture of you.  A picture that you didn’t know existed, a picture of you in a very vulnerable moment.  And the comments on the picture are cruel hateful things about something you can’t even help, or something that you would have fixed if you had only known about it.  How would you feel?

Whenever I see pictures like that, all I can think about is how that person would feel if they found out about it.  Maybe it’s time more people started thinking that way, too.

xoxo,
Alysa
